Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Anniversary

St. Vincent de Paul - Human Services Campus Dining RoomOn November 20, 1952, Johnny's Restaurant located at 435 W. Washington in Phoenix, became St. Vincent de Paul's first charitable dining room. Ironically enough, the groundbreaking ceremony (November 20, 2002) for downtown Phoenix's future Human Services Campus, through which St. Vincent de Paul will open its new dining room, marked the 50-year anniversary of the organization's first meal served.

St. Vincent de Paul and four other agencies in the Metropolitan Phoenix area are embarking on a project that will establish a Human Services Campus. Through collaboration, partnership and referrals, this campus will enable current service providers to dramatically improve how they meet the needs of the homeless and working poor, by providing improved transitional housing, better coordinated meals and case management, more effect prison and jail release integration programs, and increase healthcare access to homeless individuals and families in the downtown Phoenix area.

Although St. Vincent de Paul's dining room moved to it's current location of 9th Avenue and Madison in 1954, the idea that the first meal the charitable dining room served was on the day of the ground-breaking ceremony for the future Human Services Campus is much cause for celebration since it represents one of the finest examples of a collaborative partnerships in the state.
