A cut above the rest

For more than 48 years, David Samora welcomed workers of every kind, excited kids getting their first haircut, and generations of families who trusted him with their trims, fades and stories.
On March 28, 2025, David decided to retire, but he wasn’t hanging up his clippers for good. Instead, he figured he could continue doing what he does best while serving his community.
David travels over 50 miles from his home in Maricopa to St. Vincent de Paul’s main campus in south Phoenix every two weeks to provide free haircuts and grooming services for the transitional housing residents.
“I’m a 5th generation Arizonan. I’ve been in the community for many years. My family were pioneers in Arizona,” David said. “Arizona has been wonderful for us, so this is what I do to give back."
Whether it’s tidying up a shelter resident for an upcoming job interview or simply restoring appearance and dignity, David’s service at SVdP is very much needed and appreciated.
“It really helps bring their confidence back. People love [David] and know when he’s coming and they line up,” said SVdP Wellness Coordinator Maria Castro.
“He does stellar work, just that plain and simple. It’s a nice thing to do and good to have an individual with quality ability working on you," said Byron Perkins, an Ozanam Manor resident.
Eunice Wabbington, another SVdP resident, is thrilled for both the service and convenience.
“I haven’t been able to afford to have my hair done. It means a lot for women. It’s our crown. We take pride in our hair. To get this service here in this building is a big plus," she said.
Retirement didn’t end David’s purpose, it just changed where his chair sits.
“I just found out that SVdP in Arizona is the number one SVdP in the country,” David said. “How much better can it be for me. I love it."
