Shelter birthdays celebrated in style
Hannah Whitwer, an St. Vincent de Paul philanthropy associate, wanted to create something memorable and special for her birthday. Known for hosting lively celebrations, she also values giving back to her community, so instead of planning a traditional party, she decided to turn her special day into an act of kindness for residents at SVdP's Washington Street Shelter (WSS).
“How fun to just carry on girlhood together,” Hannah said.
She brought together a team of 13 volunteers, some of the most important women in her life, to provide one-on-one nail sessions for residents, all in the hopes of holding an event that helped others feel cherished and cared for.
“I’ve always loved doing something really special and girly for my birthday,” Hannah said.
With help from her team at St. Vincent de Paul, they organized a day of celebration, including a party for those with April birthdays at WSS.
The idea quickly grew, drawing many helping hands and generous partners. That’s when VB Cosmetics became involved, donating their one-of-a-kind Dazzle Dry nail kits to help create special memories.
“I reached out to VB Cosmetics, and the CEO responded immediately and was so excited to be involved with this women’s empowerment event,” said Bella, one of Hannah’s friends and a member of SVdP’s development team. “They were really happy to help make these women feel loved, beautiful, feminine and empowered.”
Rows of clothes, purses, tiaras, snacks, nail kits and beauty supplies were laid out for residents. Hannah’s volunteers each brought goodies of their own to share with their attendees. In all, more than 100 Dazzle Dry kits were donated.
As tables were being set and nail stations prepped, residents waited in line with enthusiasm as they awaited their turn for special treatment.
For many, it was their first time ever receiving a manicure. Some had gone months without nail trims or polish.
“It’s so good to see a bunch of smiles on people’s faces,” said Katrina, a WSS resident.
Others said the event provided a welcome break from their daily routines, offering entertainment and joy.
“First time ever in my life. It gives you hope in a place like this. Shelters naturally feel dejecting, but this is different here because of the treatment we’re getting. It shows us we still mean something,” said Gary, another resident at WSS.
The men at WSS were also eager to join in the fun, feeling appreciated and experiencing a sense of normalcy.
“It’s always nice to be able to connect with other people in relaxing ways. It doesn’t matter where you are,” said Jodi, a volunteer. “We all have similar stories of struggle. We all have things we want to celebrate, so it’s fun to talk, share and relate with each other.”
Each volunteer made it their mission to be listening ears and support for each guest that filled their station.
“I just think it's so important for people to actually involve themselves in humanity and other people's lives,” said Sarah, a volunteer.
After the nails had dried, makeup goodie bags were handed out, clothing was selected, and residents enjoyed cake prepared with love by SVdP’s Chef Chris Hofman and kitchen staff.
Residents gathered together, laughing, singing, teasing one another and enjoying the celebration.
“I loved it. It was my first time and I hope you guys come back,” said Margaret, a WSS resident.
Smiles filled the room from both volunteers and residents alike.
Cathlyn, a WSS resident, was one of the most enthusiastic attendees, shouting to Hannah, “You’re making me feel really good!”
The celebration ended with many residents expressing their gratitude and happiness to everyone involved.
“This definitely might become a tradition!” said Hannah.
