Scholar Highlight: Russvel Perez

Russvel Perez is pursuing his dream of becoming the first doctor in his family.

He’s a recent 2024 Arizona State University graduate with the assistance of SVdP’s First-Generation Scholarship Program. Now, he’s studying at Midwestern College in Chicago where he achieved “white coat” status and is on his way to achieving a Doctorate degree and becoming a physical therapist.

According to Russ, the SVdP First-Generation scholarship alleviated financial burdens as an ASU student, and more importantly the program provided mentors who were instrumental in keeping him “accountable and on track with his
academic performance.”

Serving as one of Russvel’s mentors, Debbie Castaldo of the Arizona Diamondbacks, guided him in various ways. She was always there to support Russ at the right time with exactly what was needed. Russ shared, “I didn’t think I was going to make it because of Imposter Syndrome, but every time I met with Debbie, she would set me on track, and I would come out of meeting with her on fire and feeling like I couldn’t be stopped.”

Perseverance, grit, intention, grateful, kind and caring are a few words that describe Russ. But he is so much more thanks in part to his family and all who have supported and believed in him. Yes, his family always believed – but it is others who have helped him to stay open and use the world around him. These committed supporters opened doors and opportunities that still encourage Russ today on his path to earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
