DIY Lava Lamps at the Dream Center

Simple science + super fun!

Every night at our Family Dining Room, we serve nutritious meals to hundreds of families. And after dinner, children can go to our Dream Center and get help with homework, make arts and crafts, take computer and music classes, and do awesome science experiments!

In this video, Dream Center Supervisor Cynthia Bach and two science helpers show us how to make a lava lamp at home using simple household ingredients.

How To Make a Homemade Lava Lamp

Items needed:

Empty water bottle, water, funnel, food coloring, Alka Seltzer, vegetable oil, and glitter

Step 1: Pour 3/4 cup of water into an empty water bottle.

Step 2: Using the funnel, pour oil into the water bottle filling it up, making sure the water and oil have separated.

Step 3: Put 10 drops of food coloring into the mixture. You can always add more!

Step 4: Take an Alka Seltzer tablet, break it in half, and put it in the bottle. The gas that's been realized from the Alka Seltzer will pull up through the oil with some of the food coloring, creating bubbles in the container. Feel free to add more Alka Selzter tablets.

Step 5: Add glitter!
