What’s it all about?

SVdP heat relief operations run from June 1 through Sept. 30 each year. Our dining rooms provide life-saving indoor cooling stations, ice water, snacks, hygiene kits, and other basic supplies to individuals experiencing homelessness. In 2024, Maricopa County Department of Public Health recorded 602 confirmed heat-related deaths in its 2024 preliminary report, a decrease from the record-breaking 645 deaths in 2023, despite experiencing an unprecedented heat season with 113 consecutive days above 100°F.  However, that’s still 602 human lives lost that could have been prevented. Even one heat-related death is still too many for SVdP.
